How to Ask for Referrals

There are countless ways to find new customers for your business. Social media, email marketing, billboards, and radio ads all have their place in lead generation, but few methods can compare to a solid referral-based lead generation system. When done right, each customer can lead to your next sale, creating a continuous stream of new business.

1. Lay the Groundwork

The first step in a successful referral program is laying the groundwork, which starts at the beginning of each client relationship. Start by providing a positive experience, connecting with your customers and letting them know that your business runs on referrals. Mentioning the various services you cover can also provide your customer with insight into the full range of projects you can help their friends and family accomplish.

2. Pop the Question

The best way to get referrals is to ask for referrals. If you have laid the groundwork, this can be a positive experience for both you and your customer. You can work the referral question in after the customer expresses satisfaction with the job on their own time or you can create an opportunity by asking about their satisfaction. Once your customer acknowledges they are happy with the work you have done, express your gratitude and then ask them for referrals. This can be as simple as asking “Do you know anyone who needs work done on their home?”

3. Follow Up

During a project isn’t the only time that your customers’ friends and family may need a contractor. Keeping in touch with your customers after project completion can lead to additional referral business. Add past customers to a monthly or quarterly newsletter or send them occasional updates with a reminder that you are here to help if your customer or someone they know needs help on a home improvement project.
