Tips to Connect with Customers Before, During, and After the Job

Forging a connection with your customers can lead to better reviews, repeat customers, and more referrals. There’s no single way to build this connection, but some tips that you can use to start connecting with your customers are below.

1. Before the Job

Go beyond asking what project your customer wants to complete by learning why they are choosing to have this work done. This gives your customers an opportunity to discuss their goals, motivations, family situation and other information that can help you get to know your customers beyond the basic details of their project. Take your cue from what your customer shares to let them know a bit about yourself as well.

2. During the Job

Communicate with your customers whenever possible. If you can avoid sending your customers to voicemail or forcing them to listen to a list of options before they can talk to you, they will be more likely to forge a personal connection with you. Remember to ask each person what the best way to reach them is. Some customers will prefer a quick phone call or text message while others would rather rely on email.

3. After the Job

Keep in touch with customers after the job is done. Remember to ask for feedback within a week of finishing the job. This will help you uncover and correct any last-minute issues that could leave the customer with a poor impression of you or your company. If they are happy, be sure to ask them to leave you a testimonial online. If their project requires annual maintenance, add a reminder to your calendar to reach out to them with a service reminder if not, occasional follow up emails give customers an opportunity to bring up referrals or future projects they are considering.
