What will you accomplish this year? Some contractors set goals based on what they’d like to accomplish without taking how they’ll do it into consideration. The key to creating a good goal is to make sure it is relevant, specific, measurable, and attainable.
Relevant
Your goal should matter to you and the success of your business. If not, keep brainstorming until you come up with a goal that will have a positive effect when you complete it.
Specific
If your goal is to earn more money, how? By serving more home improvement customers? Increasing your average sale price? Reducing expenses? There are many ways you can reach a goal, and you may employ several strategies to reach it, so you might choose more than one goal to reach your desired outcome.
Measurable
Words like “more” or “grow” are good starting points for a goal, but they’re too vague. Even the best end goal isn’t worth much if you can’t measure your progress or tell when you’ve accomplished it. Depending on the nature of your goal, choose a specific number or percentage that you will aim for and a deadline to accomplish it by.
Attainable
Setting ambitious goals is a great way to motivate yourself and your team, but they aren’t worth much if you can’t achieve them. Consider your results from previous years and the factors that led to those results. What positively or negatively affected your year and can you control those factors in 2022? Use this knowledge and insight to help you choose goals you realistically think you or your team can achieve.
